Friday Night Funkin': how the rap battles work and what the seven weeks throw at you
Friday Night Funkin' started as a Ludum Dare jam entry in October 2020 and became the biggest browser game of the following year. The setup is simple: Boyfriend wants to kiss Girlfriend, her father is a demonic ex-rockstar, and every character in her life challenges Boyfriend to a rap battle. Each battle is a song. The opponent sings a line, Boyfriend answers it, and the arrows scrolling up the right side of the screen are his half. Press the key that matches each arrow when it reaches the receptor; the closer to the beat, the better the rating, from a 350-point Sick with a splash down to Good, Bad and Shit.
The build on fridaynightfunkin.me is the 0.2.8 web version, the one that added Week 7 and the Tankman songs, hosted on this domain with all of its assets rather than pulled from another site. It loads the title screen first and streams each week's art and music when you pick it, so the first song of a week takes a few seconds on a school Chromebook. All eight Story entries are open from the start: Tutorial with Girlfriend, then Daddy Dearest, the Spooky Kids and Monster, Pico, Mommy Mearest, the Christmas week, Senpai and finally Tankman.

Getting through the harder weeks
- Start on Easy for Week 6 and 7: Senpai's Thorns and Tankman's Stress are the two hardest charts in the game. Easy strips out the fast triplets and the note count roughly halves; clear them once to learn the layout, then come back on Normal.
- Do not press empty lanes: This build treats a key press with no arrow near the receptor as a miss, which drains health. Keep your fingers on the keys and only press when an arrow is actually there, even when the song feels like it wants a rhythm from you.
- Hold the long notes to the end: Sustain notes are the trailing bars behind an arrow. Hitting the head is not enough: keep the key down until the bar has passed the receptor, or the tail counts as missed and the health you gained disappears.
- Use Practice Mode to learn a chart: Pause with Enter and pick Toggle Practice Mode. You cannot die, so you can play a song through, see where the note walls are, then turn it off and play for real.
- Watch the receptors, not the characters: The camera bounces and zooms on every beat and the characters animate constantly. Look at the top of your lane and let the animation stay in your peripheral vision; the arrows are the only thing that scores.
Key features
- All seven weeks and the Tutorial: Tutorial, Daddy Dearest, Spooky Kids and Monster, Pico, Mommy Mearest, the Christmas week with both parents, Senpai and Week 7's Tankman: 23 songs, every one served from this domain.
- Story Mode and Freeplay: Play the weeks in order with a combined score, or open Freeplay and jump to any single song on any difficulty; the best score per song is saved in your browser.
- Three difficulties: Easy, Normal and Hard change the charts, not just the speed. Hard adds the fast triplets and the long note walls the game is known for.
- Complete self-hosted build: Version 0.2.8 with every image, chart and audio file in place, so weeks load without hotlinking another site and nothing goes missing halfway through a song.
Game info
- Title: Friday Night Funkin'
- Developer: The Funkin' Crew (ninjamuffin99, PhantomArcade, evilsk8r, Kawai Sprite)
- Category: Rhythm
- Platform: Web browser (HTML5)
- Version: 0.2.8 web build · 7 weeks · 23 songs · Story Mode and Freeplay
Pro tip: In Freeplay the difficulty you choose sticks to the song, and the game keeps a separate best score for each difficulty. Play a song once on Easy to learn its sections, then on Hard: the note patterns are the same shapes, only denser, so the Easy run is a map of the Hard one.
